History of the Norway national football team

The Norway men's national football team has been part of international football for more than a century. Norway played its first official international match in 1908. One of the first major achievements came in 1936, when Norway won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games.

Two years later the team qualified for its first World Cup, the 1938 FIFA World Cup, where Norway narrowly lost 2-1 to eventual champions Italy after extra time.

Norway experienced its most successful period during the 1990s under coach Egil Olsen. The team qualified for the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, reaching the round of 16 in 1998. During that tournament Norway famously defeated Brazil 2-1. Norway also qualified for UEFA Euro 2000, the country's only European Championship appearance so far.

Famous Norwegian internationals include Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, John Arne Riise and Martin Ødegaard.
